Dementia is a disease which is usually associated with the elderly but it can also affect young people – and getting the support they need can be a challenge.
Angelika Wellzel-Connolly, a Dementia Action Coordinator for the Royal Borough of Greenwich, defines young dementia sufferers as anyone aged under 65-years-old. She says: “As more help becomes available, young people ca feel they can speak out more about the issues. ”
The investigation by the Assembly’s Health Committee is part of the Mayor’s plans to make London a dementia-friendly capital city.
As part of its research, the committee found that younger people are more likely to have rarer forms of dementia arising from conditions such as Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and Creutzfeld Jakob disease (CJD). Young people’s symptoms are also more likely to cause problems with movement, balance and co-ordination.
Organisations and individuals are invited to submit views and information to the committee to inform their recommendations. The deadline for submissions is 1 March 2018.
