Changes, first consulted on in 2015, involve closing the Old Street roundabout north-western arm up to City Road.
A pedestrian area will join the pavements around the edge of the sixties roundabout with the currently inaccessible centre. Changes also include segregated cycle lanes, with traffic lights for cyclists.
Safe and reliable bike storage
One of the plans being considered involves three glass bike storage towers which can store up to 204 bikes each.
The design was created by Cove Burgess Architects. The London based firm have partnered with Eco Cycle to put forward a cycle friendly, environmentally-led development.
The plan would also involve cafe space and a ‘pocket park’. It aims to open up public space for pedestrians and cyclists alike.
Nick Night, Managing Director of Eco Cycle, said “there is a massive demand for safer bicycle storage around Old Street… Many buildings have no space for workers to store their bikes.”
He added, “If we can provide safe and reliable bike storage then commuters will be far more likely to cycle on a daily basis.”
Will Norman, London’s walking and cycling commissioner, says “the transformation will make this roundabout a pleasant and safer place for all pedestrians and cyclists”.
Small businesses concerned
However some locals are concerned that the redesign could mean businesses within the roundabout may loose their premises.
One tradesperson we spoke to said “many small business start off in this space and use the space to springboard into other larger spaces… If we weren’t to have that it would be a hugely negative thing.”
