London Fashion week kicks off tonight at the The Store X. This is a pivotal week in the calendar for the fashion industry with young designers hoping to establish themselves.
Behind the veneer of celebrity and success are young industry professionals desperate to make their first big break. For them fashion week is their first opportunity to make it in the fashion world.
City News spoke to Sophie Cull-Candy, a London designer specialising in womenswear and jewellery. She said that London fashion week ‘embraces young designers’ compared to the other big 3: New York, Paris and Milan.
She added ‘Vivienne Westwood probably wouldn’t have done as well if she had started in a different city, if she had started in Paris and Italy her work would not have been received as well.’
In the wake of the September the 11th attack New York fashion week was cancelled with 73 designers having their shows cancelled. For them this was their livelihood, they relied on the revenue from their shows to continue their businesses.
Famous designers like Vivienne Westwood and ERDEM will also be showcasing their latest designs. Last year Vogue editor, Anna Wintour, sat next to her majesty Queen Elizabeth II at a show by Richard Quinn. Fashion week draws audiences of important industry players as well as popular celebrities.
This year Victoria Beckham showcases her first beauty brand encompassing skincare, fragrance and makeup. She said she wants to ‘take care of women inside and out’ with products that she feels she needs in her own life.
