Newly released John Lewis Christmas ad spotlights up-and-coming South London artist

The new John Lewis Christmas ad features south London rising star Lola Young covering 80s hit Together In Electric Dreams.

The original song was released by Phillip Oakley and Giorgio Moroder in 1984, and has been reworked by the 20-year-old artist. The ad follows the story of a young alien experiencing their first Christmas on Earth.

Young started writing songs at age 11 and won a national open mic competition. She then attended the BRIT School in Croydon, which counts numerous musical legends as alumni, including Adele and Amy Winehouse.

Raye, FKA Twigs and Loyle Carner are among the more recent well-known musical alumni.

Who is singer Lola Young?

The 20-year-old singer-songwriter has previously released an EP on Spotify titled Renaissance, as well as a debut 7-track project titled Intro.

She is signed to Island records, owned by Universal Music Group, a contract she secured after gigging in London.

Since last year, she has been writing in the studio with mega-producer Paul Epworth, who has worked with Florence + The Machine, Rihanna and Adele.

She is expected to release new tracks later this year. Young has live shows scheduled for the next two months in the UK, Ireland and Europe.

High-profile radio taste-makers have expressed their support for her, including Clara Amfo, Annie Mac and Jo Wiley.

In receiving the coveted honour of being featured in the ad, she joins superstars such as Lily Allen, Celeste and Elton John who were featured in previous years.

The retail giant’s yearly festive ad is known for collaborating in past years with big names such as Ellie Goulding, or platforming rising artists like Tom Odell.

Young, who has named Prince and Joni Mitchell as musical influences, is likely poised for mega stardom with this feature bringing her a step closer to wider recognition.
