Cabinet minister Kwasi Kwarteng says he will “probably” continue to wear a mask on the tube after legal restrictions end on 19 July.
The Business Secretary says he believes in “individual responsibility”.
He said, “I think businesses have their own discretion, their own judgement. I think individuals should also use their own judgement.
“Personally, I use the tube a lot in London and I would probably wear a mask in that context.”
This puts Mr Kwarteng at odds with Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick. Mr Jenrick said on Sunday that he does not plan on wearing a mask after 19 July.
The majority of coronavirus restrictions are due to be lifted on 19 July. These include the legal requirement to wear a face covering on public transport.
People in England will instead be encouraged to use their personal judgement on the risk of infection.
On Monday, the Prime Minister said that the public should not think “this is the end of Covid.” By mid-July there could be as many as 50,000 coronavirus cases per day, he suggested.
