England have secured a place in the Euro 2020 final against Italy.

More than 300,000 people have signed a petition for a UK-wide bank holiday on Monday 12 July if England win the final of the Euro 2020 this Sunday at Wembley.

After a tense Wednesday match against Denmark, thousands flooded to the streets in celebration. The past year has been challenging for many, but this tournament has been a welcome break of positivity.

The campaign calling for a bank holiday states:

“Sunday 8pm is a difficult time for families to plan to be together for the event – knowing we have an additional day off the next day would significantly help this. Furthermore, a historic win should be celebrated”.

Ministers have not ruled out the idea.

What has the response been?

Boris Johnson didn’t want to “tempt fate” by announcing a national day of celebration ahead of Sunday’s final at Wembley.

Sir Keir Starmer backed the plan saying “If we win on Sunday, the country should get the chance to celebrate it properly, I’d absolutely back a bank holiday and I hope bosses are flexible on Monday morning.”

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: “Let’s win the game first – and then we’ll worry about it.”

Amendments have already been made in preparation for the final, with pubs allowed to stay open until 11.15 rather than shutting at 10.30.

In addition, it is likely that manager Gareth Southgate will be knighted for his work in progressing the England team so far.

How likely is it that a bank holiday will be granted?

For a bank holiday to be granted, Prime Minister Boris Johnson would have to propose it to The Queen, who can declare it with a Royal Proclamation.

Many think it will be unlikely to get passed with only a few days to go until the final.

This is also because extra bank holidays are rare.

The most recent extra day off was in 2012 to mark the Diamond Jubilee. In June next year there will be another additional bank holiday to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

There was not an extra bank holiday when England won the World Cup in 1966.

In 2018, when England reached the semi-final of the Russia World Cup, over 200,000 people signed a petition for a bank holiday if England won. Then-Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn backed the petition but it was not supported by the Prime Minister, Theresa May.

For those in sectors such as retail, hospitality or healthcare, working on bank holidays is expected, so it seems unlikely that every single person will get a day off.
