A resident-led group is campaigning to close Rolt Street in Deptford to traffic, which they say would create “a safer crossing” to a local landmark.
Rolt Street surrounds the local Folkestone Gardens landmark in Deptford. It has previously had a trial closure as part of the campaign run by Deptford Folk parks group.
The resident-led £2.9m project is run in collaboration with Sustrans, a walking and cycling charity. Their aims for the project are “providing extra space to sit and relax and creating a safer crossing to Woodpecker Walk.”
Currently, the road is still open to cars but Deptford Folk hope that completion of the project would mean permanent closure and an expansion of the park.
Trina Lynskey, Chair of Deptford Folk, said: “If we got rid of that road we could bring it all the way back and have a great space for children to come to.”
Deptford Parks Liveable Neighbourhoods project is also in collaboration with Lewisham Council. The project was awarded the funding by Transport for London, following a high engagement of events and activities taking place across the area.
The Rolt Street closure is just one campaign included in the project. Residents are campaigning for other roads to be considered for closure to allow safer places for the community.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has supported the scheme, saying: “Our new Liveable Neighbourhood scheme will see millions of pounds invested in schemes that will directly make walking and cycling a safe, enjoyable and convenient option for many more Londoners.”
Lewisham Council is giving residents the opportunity to comment on the project until 3 January 2020.
