Alan Chilton, of the Bower Inn B&B in Bridgwater, was crowned the 2020 winner for his sausage roll with spices and tamarind ketchup.
Three former winners competed, including last year’s champion Adrian Oliver.
The competition as been held at the Red Lion pub in Barnes for seven years.
The Red Lion, Barnes has hosted the competition for the past seven years.
Melissa Cole has compered the event every year since its inception.
She said: “We’re here to support Hospitality Action. It’s there to support people who run businesses and those within the industry too. We really hoped to raise a lot of money for them this evening.”
She also said the perfect roll isn’t complicated: “When people try to go too experimental, they try to do too much.
“One year we had a pastry temple, supported by pastry pigs and the sausage roll came out on a litter like a roman emperor. Because they tried to hard to do that, the sausage roll itself wasn’t cooked.”
This year’s contest was judged by Heart FM DJ Lucy Horobin and chefs Paul Cunningham, Russell Bateman, and Paul Forster.
Judges on this year’s panel included Heart FM DJ Lucy Horobin and chefs Paul Forster (left) and Paul Cunningham.
This year’s entries included a “hangover sausage roll” with black pudding and smoky beer. A more outlandish entry was a Caesar salad sausage roll, complete with green pastry.
Audience members could sample the chefs’ entries.
Alec Tomasso was competing with his tonkatsu sausage puff pastry and panko crumbs.
He was confident about his chances.
He said: “I’ve tasted it. If they don’t like it, I’ll eat it for them.”
