As local election results continue to come in after 12 hours of counting, leaders from the main political parties have started sharing their reactions.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer admitted in an interview with the BBC that Labour’s performance so far has been underwhelming. He acknowledged the setbacks and said his government must “accelerate progress” to deliver the changes it promised.
Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey expressed optimism about his party’s chances, particularly in Shropshire Council, which has been under Conservative control for over ten years. He suggested the Lib Dems are emerging as a strong alternative, calling them “the new party of Middle England.”
Green Party co-leader Adrian Ramsay also conveyed a sense of momentum, where he expects significant gains for the Greens in council elections across the country.
Meanwhile, senior Conservative figure Kemi Badenoch has not made any new statements since the results started coming in. However, in a social media post last night, she praised both her party and the country, writing: “I’ve seen the very best of our party and the very best of our country.”
