Germany has been prevented from training at Wembley the night before their match against England on Tuesday. The announcement was made after torrential rainfall was forecast in the capital, and concerns it would cause too much damage to the pitch’s surface.
The German newspaper Bild has described the announcement as a scandal, not least because the England team have already played three group games on their home turf.
UEFA has responded describing the decision as unavoidable, given thunderstorms and heavy rain are forecast throughout the 24-hours prior to kick-off at 17:00 on Tuesday. They say the same logic has been applied to all teams playing in a last-16 match at the stadium.
The Austrian and Italian teams were also banned from training at Wembley before their knockout game on Saturday night.
According to Bild, the team’s manager Joachim Low is furious about the decision, which has forced his side to have one more training session in Herzogenaurach in Germany on Monday.
German journalist Jogi Irritiert says players from both teams must experience “the aura of the stadium, the smell of the (changing rooms) and the feeling of the turf” before the match. If they do not, Irritiert says they will not be on a level playing field before walking out onto the pitch.
The match has been whipping up hysteria among European football fans for some time. While British media outlets have suggested it will rekindle an “old rivalry”, German footballer Kai Havertz has said it will be an important one for him.
Speaking at a press conference in Bavaria on Sunday, he said: “Of course this is a special game for me.”
“I’ve played at Wembley at one point or another. It’s a big game for all of us and we’ll do everything we can to win.”
