As Fertility Week draws to a close, London Olympia will be the host to a final three-day event this weekend. Experts, doctors and patients will gather to discuss fertility options and how physical and emotional care can be improved.
Concerns have been raised that the current access to fertility treatment in London is below standard.
Fertility expert, Anya Sizer, will be speaking at this event, and will be coaching patients in how to deal with the various stages of treatment. Having gone through several of IVF treatment herself, she is committed to helping others who are now in the same position.
Sizer is an ardent campaigner for better access to IVF provisions. Whilst London is the predominant location in the UK for accessing IVF treatment, couples only get one cycle of treatment under the NHS. In contrast, couples in Scotland receive four or five cycles on average.
Sizer calls for there to be access to at least three cycles of IVF treatment under the NHS, which is the recommended amount stated by NICE.
‘Whilst infertility is considered to be a medical disease, it is also the only disease which is not fully provided for under the NHS’.
She has also raised further concerns about specific boroughs in London. Croydon has scrapped all funding for any IVF treatment under the NHS.
Experts such as Sizer hope this Fertility Week and the Fertility Show this weekend will help to raise awareness and draw attention to some of these issues, and bring about changes to fertility treatment.
