Sadiq Khan in an interview

London Mayor Sadiq Khan defended the city’s safety record, claiming London boasts lower crime rates than other major global cities.

Mr Khan said London is safer than other European cities compared to Berlin, Madrid and Paris but adds he does not want to be ‘complacent’ over crime as he launches his bid for the third time in office

Citing research from University College London, Mr Khan said the capital was safer than most major cities in Europe and the United States.

“You compare London to any global city and we are the safer city,” he told the PA news agency, pointing to research suggesting there are fewer homicides in the UK capital than in other major cities. London’s safety record remains a topic of debate.”

Crime rate

Mr Khan said the city fares well compared to other major capitals across Europe and the world as new data paints a more detailed picture.

London’s overall crime rate sits at around 87 per cent of the national average, according to crime rate statistics.

However, violent crime specifically has seen a recent rise, with a 5.7 per cent year-on-year increase reported in February 2024.

This category encompasses a broad range of offenses, with anti-social behaviour topping the list at 20 per cent, followed closely by violence and sexual offenses at 23 per cent.

While homicides remain lower than in some other global cities, concerns persist.

Hetal Upadhyay, Secretary for Conservative party for Hounslow told CityNews: “The theft, burglary, knife crimes have gone high.

“To claim London is the safest global city is totally fake and we need to have more police personnel if we really care of having a safer London.”

Mayor Sadiq Khan emphasised his commitment to tackling crime by highlighting initiatives which focused on both immediate responses and preventative measures.
