British travellers into Portugal who are not fully vaccinated will have to quarantine for 14 days from today, the Portuguese government has said.
Someone entering the country will have to show proof that they have been double vaccinated, or have to isolate for at least 14 days.
The tightening of travel will go into effect from Monday, after concerns over the spread of the Delta variant in the UK. The rules only apply to those who have not been double jabbed.
The Portuguese government says there will not be a review of these new rules until at least 11th July.
Cases have been on the rise in both Britain and Portugal. Over 70% of cases in Lisbon are from the Delta variant.
The Portuguese government have blamed a rise in infections on the Delta variant, first seen in India over the last few months.
Portugal was recently moved from green to amber on the UK’s travel traffic light list. This means that people returning from Portugal must isolate for at least 10 days when they enter the UK.
It was taken off of the green list last month after a spike in Portuguese cases. It has remained on the amber list since.
Germany next?
Germany is also trying to implement harsher travel restrictions on the UK due to concerns over case numbers.
Chancellor Angela Merkel says that she wants to see all UK travellers made to quarantine for 14 days. Regardless of whether they have been vaccinated.
This has also been supported by France – where currently, people who have not been fully vaccinated can travel for essential reasons only.
There were 14,876 new coronavirus cases in England on Sunday, a rise of 59%, latest figures show.
A new update on the UK’s travel list is set to come next month.
